About Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification
LEED certification was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The certification provides builders with guidelines on how to create a sustainable building. These requirements include a focus and consideration of:
- Sustainable Sites
- Water Efficiency
- Energy and Atmosphere
- Materials and Resources
- Indoor Environmental Quality
- Location and Linkages
- Awareness and Education of home owners
- Innovation in Design (Bonus Points)
To meet LEED certification a building can be either commercial or residential. The council considers all aspects of a building from the site location, to the beginning process of building, to every decision made throughout construction. There are different levels a building can obtain in LEED certification with a total of 100 potential points and 10 bonus points to be earned. The certification includes 4 levels:
- Certified 40+
- Silver 50+
- Gold 60+
- Platinum 80+
